UCMAS is a child development program based on Visual Arithmetic and Abacus that boosts brainpower in children aged 5-13 years. Along with strengthening math skills, the UCMAS approach promotes whole brain development and establishes foundational building blocks like memory, concentration, creativity and problem solving – core skills that inspire greater confidence and success in all subject areas and in life.
The program equips them with the skills they need to improve overall academic achievement and to confidently meet life’s challenges and achieve greatness.
Our exciting classes and energetic instructors ensure that our students have fun as they learn. Since 1993, UCMAS has helped over two million children around the world, discover the Genius within.
Abacus is an ancient calculating device, also known to be the first computer. In terms of structure, it has a frame with beads which are used in counting. There are hundreds of styles of Abacus available across the globe. Infact there are museums which showcases the huge variety of Abacus developed over a period of time.
The particular type of Abacus that we use in UCMAS is called Sorobon. The reason why we use this is it works on Base – 10 System, which is similar to the concept we use in our day to day conventional Mathematics Education.
Human brain in its early stages has the maximum learning ability. The greatest growth of human brain is during 0 to 14 years. During this period, the child progress from “Relaxed” to “Relaxed but Conscious” stage and post the age of 14, to a fully conscious stage. The human ability has to be tapped in these initial years.
A lot of organs of the human body are divided into right and left parts. Some of them appear symmetric on the surface, but their functions are not symmetric at all. For instance, the right and left hands are different in strength and skills, so is the visual sensitiveness of the right and left eyes. For the same reason, the function of the right and left hemispheres of the brain is not symmetric either. The theme to emerge from this is that there are two modes of thinking, verbal and nonverbal represented rather separately in left and right hemispheres respectively.
The nerve tissues of human fingers are directly connected to various lobes of brain.
Driving beads mutually on Abacus by right and left hand enables man's vision, sense of hearing, sense of touch and all muscles to act in concert and harmony. Thus the right and left hemispheres of the brain are simultaneously used and control the action of the hands together. The action of the right hand has developed the calculating and logical thinking function of the left brain, and the action of the left hand has developed the imaginary and creative function of the right brain.
Child is made to solve arithmetic questions on Abacus. When a child moves his or her fingers on abacus, in a designation finger movement, he or she directly stimulates the brain which leads to overall cognitive or brain skill development.
Over a period of time, the child perceives the image of abacus in his or her mind and can start solving complex arithmetic questions without Abacus.
UCMAS is a about 30 months long program which is divided into 8 Modules or about 3-4 months each. Since the children are school going children, they can primarily devote times either in weekends or in evening on week days.
A child devotes 2 hours /once a week with us.
In the initial period, the child is apprised of concepts of Abacus. Gradually, with the passing of every module, the child starts performing basic calculations mentally. By the end of program, the child solves large arithmetic questions mentally and does not need physical abacus any more.
UCMAS program is successful for children in the age group 5 to 13 Years.
